On Guard! Fencing Has Arrived in Harford County! The Maryland Fencing Club is conveniently located at 3011 Emmorton Road, next to Rita's Water Ice in Abingdon, just 5 minutes north of exit 77 on I-95. We are 10 minutes south of Bel Air, 10 minutes east of Joppa, 15 minutes north-east of White Marsh, and 20 minutes west of Havre de Grace. What is fencing? An Olympic sport since the first modern games in 1896, fencing evolved from 16th century European sword dueling. It combines the speed of boxing, the strategy of chess, and the agility of gymnastics. Fencing has been an NCAA sport since 1941. It's a fun way to get in shape and make new friends! In the recent 2008 Summer Olympics, the United States medalled in Women's Individual and Team Saber, Women's Team Foil, and Men's Team Saber .
What is a good age to start fencing? There is no one ideal age for fencing. Our classes are open to ages 7 through 70. Fencing has a large Veteran community (for fencers ages 40+), and Maryland Fencing Club has a sizable number of Veteran fencers. At this time, we are not accepting children under the age of 7 years old under any circumstances. Fencing requires a certain combination of physical, mental, and emotional maturity that most children under the age of 7 do not yet have. In order for children to develop the physical shape and coordination needed for fencing, we recommend activities better suited to younger/developing bodies such as gymnastics, karate, and swimming. |
